Powassan virus (POWV) belongs to the flavivirus family and is known for causing a rare but potentially severe tick-borne illness known as Powassan virus disease (POW). This virus has gained attention due to its ability to cause neuroinvasive disease, leading to symptoms ranging from mild fever to encephalitis. Recently, a novel lineage Powassan virus has been identified and characterized, shedding new light on the diversity and potential threats posed by this emerging infectious agent. The process of identifying a novel virus begins with comprehensive surveillance efforts. In this case, researchers focused on tick populations, as ticks serve as vectors for transmitting Powassan virus to humans.
