Following a brief historical overview of prosthodontic alloys and their nomenclature, the most significant clinically relevant physical properties of alloys are discussed in this article. The types of alloys that are currently available and their classifications are then discussed in detail. Finally, a few simple recommendations are made to assist dentists in selecting the appropriate alloys for their practices, as well as speculations regarding possible future trends in alloys.
