The condition is defined as having a Body Mass Index (BMI) that is at or above the 95th percentile for children of the same age and gender. This means that a child with obesity weighs significantly more than other children their age. Childhood obesity can lead to a number of serious health problems, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and early death. To prevent childhood obesity, it is important to understand the underlying causes and to take steps to promote healthy habits in children. The causes of childhood obesity are complex and multifactorial, but some of the most significant factors include genetics, environment, and lifestyle. Children who have a family history of obesity are at a higher risk of developing the condition, as they may have a genetic predisposition to gain weight easily.
