Biography

Dr. Chiaramello has a primary interest in mitochondrial diseases affecting the developing nervous system with an emphasis on the pediatric mitochondrial respiratory disorders. The cardinal hallmark of these progressive neurodegenerative diseases is a chronic energy deficit due to mutations in the mitochondrial or nuclear genome, thereby inducing an early onset of heterogeneous clinical symptoms in many organs. Currently, no therapeutic options are available to these patients, resulting in significant disability, poor prognosis, and premature death. Therefore, the two chief objectives of the lab are to understand the molecular pathogenesis of these mitochondrial diseases and to design novel pharmacological therapeutic avenues to rectify mitochondrial dysfunction using primary cells derived from patients.
