Dr. Aaron Fernandez is a practicing psychiatrist and lecturer in psychiatry in the Faculty of Medicine Universiti Putra Malaysia, a public-funded university. He earned his medical degree in 2001 and went on to obtain degrees in Psychology (2008) and Psychiatry (2009) He has been a Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner (CPRP) since 2011and been involved in the treatment of persons with serious mental illness since 2002. He is of the opinion that the practice of psychiatry in Malaysia has overwhelmingly leaned towards reductionism and seeks to be an agent of change towards a more humanistic psychiatry with a recovery-oriented practice. When he is not occupying himself with the travails of psychiatric rehabilitation, he?s busy shuttling his children to and fro school and is a keen follower of local politics and social justice issues. He currently resides in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with his wife and two children.
1) Stigma associated with psychiatric illness, both self-stigma and public stigma, as well as assessment and management of negative stereotypes and discriminatory behaviour in health care providers in Malaysia 2) Recovery-orientation of persons and systems with regards to serious mental illness in Malaysia 3) Supported employment and the labour-market in Malaysia 4) Coercive care in psychiatry and human rights violations.
