Biography

Dr. Mathew Kurian Consultant & Head, Department of Cataract and Refractive Lens Surgery and the Medical Superintendent at Nararyana Nethralaya. He completed his undergraduate medical school training from the Christian Medical College, Vellore, India, Ophthalmology Residency from St. Johns Medical College, Bangalore, India and the Ratan Tata fellowship in cataract microsurgery from Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, India. He has also completed Epidemiology, Statistics and Health Economics training from Christian Medical College, Vellore and St. Johns Medical College, Bangalore and an Advanced Management Program (AMP) from the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, India to support his interest in Health Care Management. He has won many awards including the Orbis international medal at the XXIX Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons at Vienna in September 2011 for the best presentation contributing to the treatment or prevention of blindness in the developing world . He has several book chapters and more than two dozen publications in peer reviewed journals to his credit. His main clinical focus includes high volume cataract surgery, challenging situations and complication management in cataract surgery, femtosecond assisted cataract surgery and refractive lens surgery including advanced technology intra-ocular lenses and phakic IOLs.
