Dr. Tiziana Cappello is doing a second PhD at the University of Messina, Italy. She achieved her first PhD with mention of Doctor Europaeus in 2013 at the University of Messina, Italy, with a doctoral thesis on environmental metabolomics in ecotoxicology. Her research activityfocuses on aquatic ecotoxicology and biomonitoring of natural environments to elucidate the biological effects of classical (metal(loid)s, hydrocarbons) and emerging (nanoparticles, pharmaceuticals, microplastics) contaminants on aquatic invertebrates and lower vertebrates, used as bioindicators. To this aim, in her research she applies the protonic Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H NMR)-based metabolomics, an innovative approach effective in assessing the organismal health status, in combination with chemometrics and conventional tools, i.e. histology, immunohistochemistry, molecular and enzymatic approaches, to gain novel and more complete insights into biota defence mechanisms under stress conditions. Dr. Tiziana Cappello serves as Reviewer for several prestigious international journals, and has participated to numerous Italian research projects.
