Lichen planus (LP) is a common chronic inflammatory disease of unknown origin, usually affecting middle-aged women. LP can involve the skin, mucous membranes, nails and hair. Treatment modalities depend on disease location, type and severity, as well as on associated diseases. It manifests a great challange due to different clinical presentations, the lack of clinical guidlines and great impact on the quality of life. Early diagnosis and indroduction of effective treatment is mandatory to improve the patient’s quality of life and to prevent complications. Here, we will present an insight on different clinical presentations and the effective treament including alternative methods like alitretinoin, acitretin, and photochemotherpy, with a view on certain associations that will enhance our understanding about the pathogenesis of the disease.
