Abstract:

In 2019, stroke was the second leading cause of death globally, with a notable increase in cases among younger adults. While well-known risk factors such as tobacco use, hypertension, diabetes, and atrial fibrillation have been extensively studied, recent findings have also associated paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT) with strokes. This report discusses a rare case of a 25-year-old woman who experienced an ischemic stroke shortly after undergoing chemical cardioversion for sustained SVT. To date, only three cases of ischemic events following cardioversion of SVT have been documented, all in pediatric patients. Currently, there is limited guidance on managing these complex cases. This case contributes to the discussion on the potential benefits or drawbacks of imaging before cardioversion of SVT and explores the proposed mechanisms linking PSVT to strokes.
