    Why Do Women Work Harder than Men? Testing the Patrilocality Hypothesis

    This article examines the idea that a woman living with her husband’s family is compelled by it to do more housework than he does. The key question in this “patrilocality” hypothesis is whether such a woman must do more housework than other women. We find direct evidence for this hypothesis in Kyrgyzstan by regressing the number of hours that the wife works outside of the house on a dummy variable indicating that she moved in with her husband’s family. An alternative to the patrilocality hypothesis states that the husband, rather than his family, compels his wife to do more of the housework.
